Starlink and the Digital Opening of Central Asia

A quiet revolution in connectivity is sweeping across Central Asia, and much of it is being delivered from low Earth orbit by an American company. Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, has moved rapidly across the region, promising high speed access to some of the most remote communities on the continent and pulling US technology deeper into local economies. For a region long constrained by its geography, the arrival of orbital broadband is proving to be a genuine turning point, and it is happening faster than almost anyone expected.

From Kazakhstan to Kyrgyzstan and Beyond

Starlink officially began operations in Kazakhstan on 13 August 2025, after the government signed an agreement requiring the company to comply with national security and telecommunications rules.

In May 2026 Kyrgyzstan became the third country in the region to gain access, with local subscribers testing the network through an exclusive operator. Tajikistan switched on service in February 2026, and Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are expected to follow during the year. Within roughly a year, a service that did not exist in the region has become a fixture of its digital map.

Bridging a Vast Digital Divide

The appeal is easy to understand. Central Asia is defined by vast distances, mountains and scattered settlements that make traditional fiber and mobile networks expensive to build. In countries where mountainous terrain covers most of the land, laying cable to every village is often impractical. Starlink’s constellation of low orbit satellites sidesteps that problem, delivering broadband to mountain villages, remote industrial sites, clinics and schools. Governments hope the technology will boost rural economies, improve public services and help close a persistent gap between cities and the countryside. Reliable connectivity also underpins everything from mobile banking to online education and remote work, so bridging the divide is as much an economic project as a social one. Analysts add that dependable internet is now a precondition for almost any modern investment.

Beyond Broadband to Mobile and AI

The ambitions reach further than home internet. In Kazakhstan, the mobile operator Beeline, part of the VEON group, signed an agreement with Starlink to introduce satellite to mobile connectivity nationwide, starting with text messaging and expanding to full data services. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, is courting the wider digital economy by offering incentives to companies that invest more than 100 million dollars in artificial intelligence infrastructure, including reduced electricity rates and support for new data centers. Satellite connectivity and computing power together form the backbone of the modern economy the region wants to build.

An American Foothold in the Region’s Future

For Washington, the spread of Starlink is more than a commercial success. It plants an American technology at the core of Central Asia’s digital future, at a time when Russia and China have long shaped the region’s information networks. Questions remain about affordability and about how governments will balance open access with state control.

Even so, the rollout marks a clear shift. Millions of people in some of the world’s most isolated places are gaining reliable internet for the first time, and they are getting it from an American provider, weaving the United States into the fabric of the region’s next chapter.
